Observations
A thorough examination by Ministry of Skin's dermatologist in Jayanagar revealed numerous inflamed papules and pustules concentrated on patients cheeks and jawline. These lesions, characteristic of inflammatory acne, were tender and some had already progressed to leave atrophic scars. Additionally, comedones, the precursors to pimples, were present on her forehead, nose, and chin.
Diagnosis
Acne Vulgaris Grade 3 with Inflammatory Lesions and Post-inflammatory Scarring.
Treatment Plan
Recognizing the complexity of the patients case, our dermatologist at Ministry of Skin in Jayanagar crafted a comprehensive, personalized treatment plan combining topical and procedural therapies. This multi-modality approach addressed both active acne and scarring:
Topical Treatments: The Patient was prescribed a customized regimen of topical medications specifically formulated to target her specific needs. These medications would help reduce inflammation, kill acne-causing bacteria, and promote skin cell turnover.
Dermal Peels:A series of carefully chosen dermal peels were planned. Each peel session at Ministry of Skin's Jayanagar clinic would utilize a specific peel formula to address comedones, refine skin texture, and stimulate collagen production, promoting smoother, healthier skin.
Q-Switched Laser Therapy:To further target persistent acne and improve the appearance of scarring, The patient would undergo a series of Q-switched laser treatments at Ministry of Skin. This laser specifically targets affected areas, reducing inflammation and promoting healing, ultimately leading to a clearer complexion.
Patient Education: An integral part of the patients treatment plan was comprehensive patient education. Ministry of Skin's team in Jayanagar provided detailed information on acne management, proper skincare practices, and realistic expectations for successful treatment.
Results
By combining targeted topical medications with advanced procedures like dermal peels and Q-switched laser therapy, this multi-therapy approach helped to achieve significant improvement in the patient's acne. The goal was to reduce inflammation, clear existing breakouts, minimize scarring, and promote overall skin health. With successful completion of the treatment plan, the patient experienced clearer, smoother skin with reduced breakouts and a diminished appearance of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (red/dark marks) left by acne.
It's important to note that while the treatment addressed these marks, we have not treated deeper atrophic scars yet. Depending on the severity, additional procedures like microneedling or filler injections might be recommended in the future.
Discussions
While acne is often associated with teenagers, it's increasingly common in adults, referred to as adult-onset acne or persistent acne. This patient's case exemplifies this growing trend. The reasons for adult acne are complex and can involve hormonal fluctuations, stress, genetics, and certain medications.
